Rounded Arches were very popular in architecture in the 1980’s and 1990’s with many homes still to this day having rounded arches. But many struggle working with Rounded Arches and how do you modernise a Rounded Arch without it dating your space? Well quite easily!
If you don’t want your Rounded Arch to look out of place and want it to blend in with the surroundings, then opt for rounded features with your furniture and furnishings. If you keep everything square and with sharp lines, then your eye will be drawn more towards the Rounded Arch, making it stand out more and this too can then date the space. So it’s better to work with your Rounded Arch and to style your room accordingly.
If you do want your Rounded Arch to be a feature, then think about highlighting the arch shape in a contrasting paint colour to your walls or even add cladding to the inside of the arch in a different type of material. And if you want your eye to be lead into the next room of the archway, then think about painting these walls of the next space in a contrasting colour, so you see that hint of colour through the archway.
From a design point of view, you can be clever with your Rounded Archway and use this as part of the room design by using the arch as an alcove and including it into your cabinetry design. This works well for study nooks, seating areas, shower alcoves or even as a frame for a splash back in a kitchen or bathroom.
