Adding a Timber Feature is a great way to add some warmth and character to any space. Timber is a very versatile choice of material as it works well with many classical and modern styles and can be used in many different ways. You don’t always have to add a lot of Timber to your space and sometimes it’s nicer only having Timber in smaller areas as an accent or as a feature as opposed to the main choice of material. Timber works well with stone, concrete, marble and metals as it provides some warmth to these materials that can sometimes feel cold. And if white is more your thing, then adding a Timber Feature to a white room will remove that starkness and sterile feeling that many are afraid of creating from an all white space.
Tip: It’s always best to protect your Timber Features with a coating of some sort. If you don’t want to change the colour of your timber and keep things modern, then stick to a clear and a water based clear will bring out some of the natural colours in the timber, but without yellowing over time. Whereas, if you want to darken or change the colour of your timber, it’s then best to look at using a stain. The quickest way to stain is using a stain and varnish in one and for extra protection you can then apply a harder wearing clear on top if you choose. Whereas if you prefer to be in more control of the colour you are creating, then it’s best to use a stain first so you can play around with the intensity of the colour. Once you are happy with the colour you have created with the stain, you’ll then need to apply a clear for protection.
