As house block sizes are becoming smaller and smaller and many are choosing to live in the city, garden and back yard sizes too are decreasing in size with Terrace Gardens becoming the “norm” when it come to back yards and gardens. It can be surprising just how much you can fit in a small space when it comes to garden and entertaining areas. Just because you may have a Terrace Garden, it doesn’t mean you need to miss out on style and space.
Like with architecture, darker colours are on trend when it comes to outdoor spaces. Having darker fences and walls always makes greenery that is in front pop and really stand out. Don’t be afraid to go dark-Â yes darker colours can enclose an interior space however they always lighten up outside and darker colours seem to disappear into the background and surroundings.
For choice of materials for a modern Terrace Garden, think stone, brick, concrete, timbers and metal. The earthy feel of the stone, brick and timbers compliments nicely against the coldness of concrete and metal. If you are going to add lots of greenery to your Terrace Garden, then you want all your other materials to be kept natural so they don’t take away too much from your garden.
Tip: It’s how you make the most of your Terrace Garden that matters! Think about proportions – if you want to create height within your Terrace Garden add lots of taller plants, higher fences or even levels within your garden. And if you don’t have much ground space, opt for vertical wall gardens so you can still have your greenery without taking up too much ground space. Whereas if you are wanting to add the perception of more width, then run decking or pavers etc. long ways so the same direction as the back wall and if you have a panel fence or wall, then run the panels across instead of up and down. These little tricks on the eyes will instantly make your space feel taller and or wider.
