Timber Cladding is still a very popular choice of material for modern exterior facades as it can break up the harshness of modern materials such as render and brick and also works well with stone, concrete and metal. Timber Cladding can add some warmth because of its natural and earthy elements and is a timeless material that also adds some interest and dimension. Timber Cladding can be used in many ways on an exterior building and can either be used as a contrasting feature or a subtle one by opting for a colour similar to the rest of the building.
There are many different coatings you can use on Timber Cladding to protect the timber and each of these will create different looks. If wanting to keep your facade and Timber Cladding dark, then look at using a black stain such as Intergrain Charred Black Timber Stain or Porters Palm Beach Black. These are the darkest exterior stains we have available that are pretty much a black but still retain some of the timber grain unlike paint does. Whereas if you prefer to keep your Timber Cladding more natural looking, you’ll still have to coat it for protection with a product such as Intergrain Ultraclear Exterior, Cabots Exterior Clear or Cutek CD50 Extreme. If you are wanting your timbers to look at naturally bare as possible but still wanting to protect the Timber Cladding, Cutek CD50 Extreme is the way to go as it’s a penetrating oil that penetrates into the timber and looks very natural while still protecting and nourishing the timber. If you are wanting your timbers to grey off then Cutek CD50 Extreme left as clear is the product you’ll want to use. And if you don’t want your timbers to grey off and still want to use Cutek CD50 Extreme, then you’ll want to make sure you add Cutek Colourtone to the CD50 Extreme as this will eliminate the timber from greying off. Just remember, any timber coating will require regular maintenance and recoating. Depending on the location, how much UV rays your timber receives and choice of product will depend on how often you will need to recoat your timber but general rule of thumb for recoating is about every 12 months, sometimes may be less or sometimes more. If you prefer your timbers to last many more years before having to recoat, then painting them with an exterior premium paint such as Dulux Weathershield or Cabots Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint will be the way to go, however you will lose the appearance of the timber grain since paint will be in solid colour.
